Earlier this afternoon I met with Councilman Edward's, Councilman Flotterman and Commissioner Dawson all from the Town of Islip to discuss further improvements of Recreational Fishing within the Town of Islip. The meeting went very well and we will be having more discussions and additional meetings in the future. They were receptive and are willing to work along with us. Stay tuned for more info.

AT a recent meeting of the M.R.A.C. Arnold Leo of the town of East Hampton Commercial Fishiers Consultancy stated that much of the weakfish discussion at the recent ASMFC meeting focused on natural mortality and predation. He contends that most winter flounder, river herring, and weakfish are being predated by striped bass . To impose a complete moratoritium on weakfish harvests won't address this central problem. He recommended liberalizing limits on striped bass harvests.

Arnold might have a point there. Also, the increased seal population is doing a number on the flounder as well.

Not a scientific study just my humble opinion. I see more comorants flying around than ever before. They eat like crazy, they hunt in groups and kill everything in thier path. I once watched a single bird make five dives and scored five eels, now how many postage stamp size flounder could be gobbled up in those dives. Canada is letting hunters shoot them.

Marty you are right about that. Pakalolo with the seals I would say the same , but Leos point on bass is way off.

I agree with Willie. Arnold Leo is way off here. He is favoring additional commercial harvesting of Bass. Wrong, wrong, wrong. I am not a marine biologist, but common sense dictates that with all the other factors involved, that is not a positive way to increase weakfish stocks. bs

I have never understood why the powers that be don't close the weakfish season during thier spawn. The early fish(April,May and early June) are loaded with roe. Why kill them???

I will never forget , that when the bass stocks were way down . It was the commercial intrest that said it is the bluefish who are killing all the young bass. Nothing changes.

The first official meeting of the Brookhaven Fishing Advisory Board was held on 1/13/10 . The meeting went very well and the town offered some major improvements.
Everything looks positive for future meetings which will be held every two months.
